A search of the car, however, deemed the report unfounded, police said.
Emergency Dispatch Services received a report that a man had parked his pick-up on the eastbound side of the highway at mile marker 4.2 in Hampden Township and was pointing a handgun at oncoming traffic at 11:53 a.m.
Both directions of traffic were immediately shut down and the car was surrounded, thanks to coordinated efforts by a SWAT team including Hampden Township, Camp Hill and Pennsylvania State police forces.
The driver and the vehicle were searched but no gun was found according to State Trooper Megan Ammerman.
No charges have been filed for the incident, says Ammerman.
The westbound lanes of the highway reopened around 2:25 p.m. and the eastbound lanes reopened around 2:50 p.m., according to PennLive.
Police and dispatch do not know why someone reported that the pick-up truck driver was pointing a gun at traffic.
